COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE SPECIALIST

Basic Function
The primary role of this non-exempt position is the efficient mining, development, reporting and use of competitive intelligence (CI) data to help drive the firm’s marketing and business development efforts.
Essential Duties
• Support business, client, competitive, and market intelligence with complex, on-demand primary and secondary research.
• Conduct analysis and document findings. Develop intelligence reports and briefing documents including data visualization tools and charts as appropriate.
• Support market intelligence and environmental monitoring. Train and assist users in creating and reviewing alerts.
• Support to CRM team with research and record management. Serve as back-up to CRM team on data maintenance tasks.
• Support to experience and knowledge management with research and record management.
• Compile and track CI requests. Work with CI Manager and BD team to demonstrate ROI on CI.

Other Duties
• Monitor for new CI sources. Identify and evaluate potential resource acquisitions. Continued development of CI techniques and best practices.
• Provide training and develop reference materials for BD team on CI resources and techniques.
• Perform other related tasks and projects as assigned or needed.

Reporting Relationship:
The Competitive Intelligence Specialist reports directly to the Competitive Intelligence Manager.

Qualifications:

Knowledge/Experience

One to three years’ experience working as a librarian, researcher and/or analyst strongly preferred. Experience with Lexis, Westlaw, KnowledgeMosaic, atVantage, PACER or similar
preferred. Proficiency with free government and open source resources, business and corporate directories, finance and securities data, and litigation searches required. Experience working with law firm software is preferred (including LexisNexis InterAction, Hubbard Experience Manager, DeskSite, intranet/portal technologies, and knowledge management tools (CMS, DMS).) Experience in the administration of database technologies a plus. Data visualization skills and experience with Adobe InDesign or similar desktop publishing software a plus.

Skills

Superior MS Office skills (especially with MS Excel) are required. Individual must be organized and able to multi-task in a fast-paced, professional environment. Additionally, superior research and analytical skills are required. Strong data manipulation, computer and information management skills, including knowledge of databases and database administration. This self-motivated individual must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and must be able to effectively prioritize work and meet hard deadlines. The ability to work both independently with limited supervision, as well as a part of a team is a must. The ability to work with many different types of personalities at all levels of organization is a must.

Education

A four-year degree, from an accredited university, with a course of study in library or information sciences (MLS or MLIS) strongly preferred. Combination of education in a research-intensive field with relevant work experience will be considered.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to move around the office up to 15% of the time to make copies, fax, file, etc; Remains stationary at least 85% of the time. This position operates computers and other office productivity machines (e.g., fax machine, copier, printer, etc) on a regular basis.); Use of software requires accurate identification of colors frequently. Occasionally required to move documents or files weighing up to 15 lbs; This position requires constant communication and exchange of information with the Firm attorneys, clients and staff; This position must be able to inspect and observe information on a computer screen at least 80% of the time.

The Research Librarian supervises day-to-day operations of office library location and performs legal research for lawyers and clients using a variety of electronic and print resources. Projects may include retrieving court documents; locating contact information for individuals; obtaining legal, business and medical/scientific literature; authenticating cited sources; finding biographical details on judges and counsel; and tracking litigation.

This position can reside in our Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, or San Antonio office.  This position reports to the Director of Library Services in Houston, Texas.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research in a wide range of areas of law: business intelligence, public records, legislative history and news media
  • Perform research on and prepares company and industry profiles
  • Deliver library instruction to new lawyers and staff; provides library orientation to summer associates
  • Support the firm’s usage of legal and business databases by securing passwords, coordinating introductory and recurring training and trouble-shooting technical issues
  • Maintain relationships with lending libraries and document retrieval services
  • Assist with collection development by evaluating information needs, research requests, available resources and usage patterns; provides input on addition of new resources and removal of resources no longer needed
  • Assist with collection maintenance duties including the ordering and cataloging of books, routing serials and shelving materials
  • Assist with financial management of the library by reviewing and confirming invoices and allocating expenses to the appropriate accounts
  • High level of contact with lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries and other firm Librarians; moderate level of contact with members of the firm’s Marketing department, vendors, lending libraries; and occasional level of contact with firm clients
  • Other projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong work ethic and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Master of Science in Library and Information Science
  • 3-5 years of law or special library experience
  • Experience using major legal and business databases/research platforms, including Westlaw Next, Lexis Advance, Courtlink, PACER, Heinonline, CCH Intelliconnect, Monitorsuite
  • Experience using automated library systems; InMagic Genie experience preferred
  • Ability to learn new applications and research tools quickly
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, perform under tight time deadlines and flexibly adjust to changing priorities
  • Ability to self-manage
  • Light to moderate physical effort, including climbing step stools, pushing loaded book carts, lifting books (weighing up to 30 pounds) and carrying various other materials (weighing up to 15 pounds)

Competitive Intelligence and Proposal Manager

Summary of Position:

The primary role of the Competitive Intelligence and Proposal Manager is to manage:

  • Proposals, responses to RFPs, and RFP and pitch presentations, inclusive of tracking, analysis and reporting of outcome and current/prospective client feedback
  • Competitive and market intelligence, including briefing books/research on current (for cross-selling opportunity identification and strategy) and prospective clients
  • Legal rankings, including Chambers, Legal 500 and Best Lawyers (partner with business development professionals and web/experience specialist within department)
  • General survey questions and submissions
  • Experience database and proposal pilot, including data collection, retention, purposing and analysis to identify new ways to market Firm and attorneys, potential niche practices the Firm should consider for lateral hiring purposes, etc. (partner with business development professionals and web/experience specialist within department)
  • Partner with Communications Team to write up and submit practice group, industry team and attorney award nominations
  • Strategy materials and research (laterals and law firm intelligence with assistance from Communications Team and Recruiting and Professional Development Department)

Assist with

  • Bio, practice group, industry team and specialty practice group write-ups using AP style, consistency, and tone and voice of newly established brand One-sheet, brochure, white papers and other related collateral development
  • Ongoing experience database phases/enhancements, such as Aderant integration

Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must have:

  • Understanding of relational databases
  • The ability to organize large amounts of content in a logical manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with excellent proofreading skills to align with AP Style
